AIMP is a sophisticated but free music player that you can use to perform other functions that you would otherwise accomplish using separate programs. For example, you can use it as an audio recorder, converter, a tag editor and even scheduler.
Installing AIMP
The process of installing AIMP was straightforward. It gave us the option to install it to our Windows system or use it as a portable program from our chosen drive and folder. The easy-to-follow instructions allowed us to integrate the MP3 player to Windows context menu even when we chose the portable option.
Using AIMP
The player displayed a relatively simple user interface featuring a dark theme, which we could change. Immediately to the top right side of the main program window was an equalizer window.
Equalizer
The equalizer included 22 presets that we could select from or adjust the bars manually to make our own preferred setting. We could also let the player auto-adjust equalizer preset for a track. The window included a preamp level adjuster and speaker balance slide bar. We could choose to display the equalizer window on the left side of the main player window or turn it off.
The equalizer was not activated by default, but we activated it under DSP Manager from where we could make several other adjustments. For example, we could add and adjust the levels of such sound effects as echo, reverb, flanger, chorus, bass, enhancer, speed, tempo and pitch. The player also allowed us to choose different mixing options, including manual and automatic track switching.
Playback
When AIMP started playing a track, the track’s name and other details displayed on the top section of the computer screen for about five seconds irrespective of the program we were using. It also kept rolling the name on the upper part of its interface, including other details like size, bitrate and samplerate.
Whenever we selected a new track or folder, we had to either type a name for our playlist or choose the one entered by default. The player displayed buttons with the names of the last three folders, which we could click on to start playing tracks. The search bar on the lower part of the interface allowed us to jump to a specific track on the selected folder, and pressing Enter launched the track.
In addition to common features like shuffle and repeat, the program’s interface let us choose different visualizations, which included graphic equalizer and analog meters that changed in tune with the playing track.
Utilities
The Tag Editor feature enabled us to either add or remove tags to or from selected tracks. The audio converter allowed us to convert files to several formats, including APE, FLAC, MusePack SV8, OGG Vorbis, Opus, WAVE, WavePack and WMA. However, MP3 format was not included for patent reasons, but the player gave instructions on what to do.
Conclusion
Although AIMP is a free music player, it is a versatile program that gives you more functions in one small package.

If you are looking for a simple way to download free icons, then FreeIconFinder is the tool you need. The lightweight application gives you access to an online database of over 300,000 icons in a simple graphical user interface.
Using FreeIconFinder
When we launched FreeIconFinder, it displayed a plain interface with a search box and list of icon categories, which were arranged in alphabetical order. Clicking a category displayed the icons it contained, and we could click on any of them for the software to show a large version of it.
The program allowed us to move either to the previous or next icon from the preview window displaying the current icon. If we liked or wanted to view more icons from given designers, we simply clicked on their respective names to visit their dedicated pages displaying their own works.
In addition to displaying the names of icon designers and app developers, the program also provided rating scores for the icons, their types, options for comments and license type. To post a comment, we needed to provide a name, e-mail address and the comment. We could also add a website address. Some icons had options for comments switched off.
The icon types included desktop, iOS, flat, outline and miscellaneous icons. These icon types also gave us another way of making searches. For example, clicking on desktop displayed different icons especially designed for the desktop.
When we were looking for specific types of icons, we typed the relevant keywords in the search box and FreeIconFinder displayed results matching the keywords irrespective of the designers or app developers.
When we found an icon that caught our attention, we easily saved it to our computer. We did that by right-clicking on and saving it as PNG or JPG image on our desired location. The application did not only give us the opportunity to download free icons but also upload our own to the iconsfind.com database for the benefit of other users.

It is important to select a smaller range for best results that are easily manageable. You can set the application to automatically detect your IP range. The scanner displays the number of devices and threads found, including their respective host names, MAC-addresses and response times.

We could then connect and send messages to remote computers. The message service you use must also be running on the remote computer. The scanner gave us several ways of opening computers, including as normal or secure Web, FTP, Telnet and remote desktop.
The scanner enabled us to mount shared folders and use them as network drives. We could also check the ports we defined, and the application would give us a report if any of the ports was open. The program is handy in resolving host names and automatically detecting external and local IP range. Resolving host names mean converting IP addresses to host names that humans can understand easily.
We configured SoftPerfect Network Scanner to operate as we wanted. Under “General” Options alone, we could make 15 configurations, including maximum threads, ping timeout, ping method and number of attempts.

 If you are an advanced user who would like to configure almost all aspects of your media player, then PotPlayer is your answer. The versatile player is so flexible that you can not only use it to play many media file formats but also customize it to suit your individual taste.
Using PotPlayer
PotPlayer gave us the option to install additional codec during installation, which we accepted to enable the program to support many file formats. It was compatible with all common video, audio and playlist formats we tested.
The player´s main user interface was deceptively bare, as it only contained the usual playback controls. However, the software hid many intuitive settings and features under the hood. The plain interface made it easy to use and did not distract us from enjoying what was being played. We could access the settings either via the main menu or context menu. Unlike many programs, we accessed menu items via a drop-down list by clicking on the upper left corner of the program window.
On the lower right corner was the settings button that allowed us to adjust audio, video, subtitle and playback settings. Audio settings included a 10-band graphic equalizer with 19 presets. Unlike other media players, double-clicking paused playback instead of playing in full screen and back. Its full screen button was next to the close button on the upper right corner.
The player allowed us to add files from a variety of sources, including local and removable discs, web streams, webcam, television or other external audio streams. We could adjust its transparency using a small slide bar on the upper right part of the user interface, next to the minimize button.
Creating and managing playlists was a breeze. We could sort the files in a playlist using different criteria, such as by folder, extension or at random. If there were duplicate files, we could set the program to skip the duplicates.
The player allowed us to apply various video and audio processing filters. If there were any synchronization problems between video and audio or audio and subtitle, we could easily correct them. We could even download relevant subtitles for the videos we played.
PotPlayer offered us a perfect way of relaxing without forgetting to switch off our computer. We could set it to shut down the computer or put it to sleep after a specified duration or at a particular time.
The free media player is suitable for both basic and advanced users. The size and appearance of the user interface changes depending on the file being played.
